That's not to say the other Nobel prizes are illegitimate. Quite the contrary, the people who received the prizes in academic areas were quite deserving. But the Peace Prize? While it was once a legitimate award for well-deserved actions, it has officially lost its prestige.
When they gave out the award to Yasser Arafat, it lost prestige.
When they gave out the award to Al Gore, instead of someone like Aung San Suu Kyi, who actually did something meaningful, it lost prestige.
Now, the people who carry on the legacy of Alfred Nobel have decided to award the Peace Prize, what should be one of the most coveted awards in the world, to President Barack Obama. And for what? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
The Nobel Peace Prize is supposed to be awarded for ones accomplishments. It's the same prize handed out to Nelson Mandella for ending an apartheid government, desegregating an entire country, and bringing peace to South Africa. President Obama's biggest accomplishment is not accomplishing anything.
- He promised "change" for health care...Nothing.
- He promised "change" for Iraq and Afghanistan...Nothing--as a matter of fact, things have gotten worse.
- He promised "change" for the economy...That's gotten worse too.
- He promised a new era of bipartisanship in Washington DC...If the tensions have changed at all, things have become more divisive, not less.
It's a shame that what could be such a prestigeous award has been reduced to a club of ego-stroking extremists with a political agenda.
what you said is true, but who was the last person promising changes on all those matters on this scale? So how about give him some time, wait and see.
ReplyDeleteSitting, waiting, and wishing is what puts this country into the mess we've been in. If we want something done then WE as a country need to get it done. The politions mess up every time so why do we keep handing them the jobs only to whine about it later?
ReplyDelete-some kid
"...but who was the last person promising changes on all those matter on this scale?"
ReplyDeleteBill Clinton. Same promises, same results
NADA!
"...so how about give him some time, wait and see"
ReplyDeleteThis prize is about accomplishments that have benefited the world in regards to peace, not about some guys PLANS to accomplish something. The Nobel Peace Prize means nothing anymore.
He won the prize for not being George W Bush. It's that simple. The world hated Bush, hated America for electing him once, hated what he did to the world. Obama hasn't acheived anything of real consequence yet. However he has restored the worlds faith (a little) in America because he's not a warmongering moron.
ReplyDeleteSo congratulations Obama on winning your "Thank Goodness You're Not That Retard" award.
Yeah it's a pointless prize, yeah he shouldn't have won it. However it does show how much of an unpopular moron Bush was (and anyone who was dumb enough to vote for him). Bush is just lucky the committee didn't issue it as a bounty to have him killed.
'Anonymous' has a point. Bush was unpopular around the world. However, one needs to ask the question "why?". What policies, expressly unique to George W. Bush's administration, were so reviled? Of course, issues like the PATRIOT Act, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will be brought up. But, again, ask yourself, "why were those so reviled?". Was it because they were blatantly flawed policies, so terrible that no politician had ever before made such serious errors? Or perhaps it was because an anti-Bush opposition movement played on those flawed policies, blew them way out of proportion, and allowed a global community with an already less-than-stellar view of the U.S. use these is issues as a launching pad to lambaste us?
ReplyDeleteBut I suppose that's a debate for another time.
